If I were to take the Quest with me to Colorado Springs, what is the likelihood that the CVT would grenade under 100k miles? I only ask because I don’t trade in for the Fiesta ecoboost until the 21st and want to make sure I’ve considered everything. That said, even if the general consensus is that it’s sturdy, the fiesta is still much cheaper and will get about double the MPG. I’m just curious if anyone has anecdotal evidence for V6 Nissan CVT reliability in heavier vehicles like this

You’ve only had the car for a few months, right? Already getting rid of it?
edit: read it. The Quest should be fine near term.

Yeah, it’s somewhat of a long story but I don’t need such a large vehicle anymore. My intention is to move to Colorado within the year but my Mustang will be staying in FL with my brother

How many mountain passes are you going to hit? My buddy has an old sentra with the CVT in southern wyoming and its been no problem.

2014 pathfinder owner here
My cvt was replaced last year
Basically the 2013 and early 2014 had the problems
I even tow once in while with mine
You should be ok, even if it does fail it will just jerk
The warrenty should be 7 years on the cvt

It depends on what part of colorado you are moving to, the western half is biggly mountains, the eastern half is knows as western Nebraska. It should do fine on occasional jaunts into the mountains. If you are moving to Durango you should buy a 6 speed WRX.

So it doesn’t just snap when it fails? My quest is a 15, the year they introduced the artificial shift points into the ECU programming

Wow, I wouldn’t keep a vehicle that I was worried about any major failure before 100k! 220k on my daily, next weekend it’s making the 4+hr drive to Minnesota. It took my dad to Wyoming for his yearly hunting trip last year when his truck was down. If you can’t trust a vehicle with less than 100k, sell it and get something you can trust. If a vehicle is taken care of, 100k shouldn’t even be a question.
Hell, 200k is kind of my reliability marker, if it can’t make that without major failure, it doesn’t belong in my collection. Hence why our F250 is up for sale.

In general they shudder, have jumpy acceleration. I hate that they made fake shifts, it’s against the point of a CVT.
But if you got a 2015 the chances of a failure are very low compared to the earlier years. Mine failed the morning I was bringing it to get a recal done to reprogram the cvt.
The replaced the cvt the next week, so I still drove it a whole week with the shudder.
Note that these are metal belts. With hundreds of pieces

Yeah, it really does defeat the point of the CVT. That is encouraging news though. I’m still not sure if I’ll keep it...but if I do this will help me have fewer nightmares about the transmission.

I was scared, then over a year ago I got a letter from Nissan saying the warranty for the transmission is now 7 instead of 5 years(funny since it was the same letter that informed me about the recall to reprogram the cvt.
Then it failed at the now halfway point of the warranty.
When I asked my dealer if I was going to get the same old cats that fail he said no, it’s the same part number as the 2015 and newer. Then I was scared to get the fake shifts.
Overall I really enjoy my cvt, even if I wanted nothing to do with nissans because of the cvt. I love the constant and smooth acceleration. The 3.5 is a great fit for this cvt.

Do they recommend any fluid change/service to extend it’s life?

Former 14 Altima owner here.
CVT turned into a grenade after 2.5 years and 61k miles. Towed it to the VW dealer and traded it. Best decision ever after my string of 7 Nissans.
